Physical Education

We believe strongly in the benefits of active involvement in physical activity. Classes are involved in regular physical education lessons as well as daily fitness.

Sports Programme

Children are involved in weekly sports sessions with the other classes in their syndicate. The sports range from t-ball, cricket, touch rugby, volleyball and athletics in the summer to rippa rugby, basketball, badminton, football and netball in the winter.

School Sports Events

School athletics (junior and senior), swimming (senior), rippa rugby (year 3-8), triathlon (year 5-8) and cross country (junior and senior) events are held annually. From the senior school events children that qualify go onto participate at Central Otago events and those that qualify from there go onto Otago champs in these sports.

Winter Sports
The winter sports programme in Term 3 is the highlight for many children; Year 1-3 children do ice -skating while Year 4-8 children can choose from skiing or snowboarding at Coronet Peak or golf at the Arrowtown golf course.

Swimming lessons are in term 4 and each child has 6 lessons at Aqualand run by their qualified instructors.
Sport run through clubs

Weekend sport through clubs is also offered in our area. Football is run by the Queenstown Junior Football Club, Rugby is run by the Arrowtown Junior Rugby club, Netball is run by the school, Basketball is run by the Queenstown Junior Basketball club, Hockey is run by the Queenstown Hockey club, Athletics is run by Remarkables Runners club. Web addresses for these clubs can be found on the Community page of the school website.

School Camps and Outdoor Education

Senior classes have wonderful outdoor education activities:
    • Year 6 classes have a local camp involving two days of outdoor activity including sailing and kayaking followed by a trek into Macetown for two nights under canvas in there with loads of activities including, tubing down the river, flying fox, archery and the legendary games of spotlight at night!
    • Year 7 children travel to Camp Columba at Pukerau for their camp. Columba is a great venue for this age group with a wide range of exciting activities including kayaking, abseiling, rock wall climbing, waterslides and the legendary games of spotlight at night!
    • Year 8 children travel even further away - to Akaroa in Canterbury where they do a whole lot of exciting outdoor education run by the YMCA. Activities include sailing an old ketch, sea activities, adventure games and the legendary games of spotlight at night!
