Year 3-8: Netball 2017

Welcome to Arrowtown School Netball 2017!
2017 SEASON CALENDAR

The Wakatipu Netball Centre has set the dates for the 2017 season as follows:
  • First game for all teams is Saturday 6th May (1st Saturday in Term 2)
  • No games on Queens Birthday weekend, ie. Saturday 3rd June
  • There will be games for all teams on the 1st Saturday of the July school holidays, Saturday 8th July
  • Years 3 - 5 FINALS DAY is Saturday 29th July (1st Saturday in Term 3)
  • Years 6 - 8 FINALS DAY is Saturday 5th August (2nd Saturday in Term 3)

The weekly WNC Saturday draw will be online here, uploaded by WNC the preceding Tuesday evening.
All games are played at the Queenstown Events Centre.
There are also annual tournaments, which at the discretion of the Club the school may or may not enter in, as follows:
  • Alexandra Primary School Tournament, at Molyneux Park, Alexandra - Saturday 1st April 2017, Years 4 - 8
  • Southland Primary Schools Tournament, in Invercargill – Wed 2nd August for Year 7, Thurs 3rd August for Year 5, Wed 9th August for Year 6, and Tue 15th August for Year 8
  • Otago Southland Primary Schools Challenge Tournament, at Cross Recreation Centre, Balclutha, Saturday 2nd September




Team Chant rules:
    • to refer to team name and/or Arrowtown
    • not be longer than 30 seconds (!)
    • an example of a team chant, entered in 2015 by our then Year 5s (now Year 7s), is shown in the video below which was prepared for a Southern Steel competition. They won! This video shows Wendy Frew coming to school as part of the winning prize.

COACHING COURSE DATES

Please note that it is compulsory for coaches to attend the appropriate course but also a valuable way to learn the rules of these adapted games and also learn warm drills and coaching skill that can be used in coaching in the future.  All attendees will receive a manual to take with them for future reference also, which is a very useful tool.
 
Year 1 & 2 – Wednesday 5 April, 4.00pm to 5.30pm at Remarkables Primary School, Wai 1 classroom (bottom floor, building closest to the Hilton Hotel)
Year 3 & 4 – Wednesday 5 April, 6.00pm to 7.30pm at Remarkables Primary School, Wai 1 classroom (bottom floor, building closest to the Hilton Hotel)
Year 5 – Thursday 6 April, 6pm to 8pm at Shotover Primary School Hall
Year 6, 7 & 8 - Wednesday 10 May, 6.00pm to 8.00pm at the Events Centre

What happens in netball across the different year groups?

  • Years 1 and 2
4 x 4 aside netball on 1/3 of a full sized court in line with Netball NZ ANZ futureFerns, run wholly within the school by teachers and volunteer parents, typically during lunchtime. Goal height 2.1 metres, ball size 20cm soft.

  • Years 3 & 4
5 x 5 aside netball on 2/3 of a full sized court in line with Netball NZ ANZ futureFerns programme.  Ungraded teams of 6-7 players with the focus on participation & fun, and compulsory rotation of positions throughout the season. 1 practice per week run by parent coaches.  Coaching course and materials are provided. Goal height 2.6 metres, ball size 4.

  • Year 5
6 x 6 aside netball on a reduced court in line with Netball NZ ANZ futureFerns programme.  Ungraded teams of 7-8 players with the focus on participation & fun, and compulsory rotation of positions throughout the season.  1 practice per week run by parent coaches.  Coaching course and materials are provided. Goal height 2.6 metres, ball size 4.

  • Year 6
7 x 7 aside netball on a full sized court. Ungraded teams of 8-9 players with focus on participation & fun, with strict rotation not compulsory although it is advised to ensure the players continue to develop skills throughout all positions on the court. 1 practice per week run by parent coaches.  Coaching course and materials are provided. Goal height 3.05 metres, ball size 5.
  • Years 7 & 8
7 x 7 aside netball on a full sized sized court, with players graded at the first day of the season, being Grading Day.  1 practice per week run by parent coaches.  Coaching course and materials are provided. Goal height 3.05 metres, ball size 5.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

The club ie. the development of our children’s netball, cannot run without our parent volunteers. We require a Year-level representative plus coaches and managers for all teams.  Fundraising objectives involving parent help will also be required.
